Autechre's music has always had a non-human quality to it, and each record has had a different avenue to express their dance between human and machine, from the sci-fi-esque sounds of Incunabula and Amber to the Industrial sound of Tri Repetae and beyond. Autechre's music sounded otherworldly yet had human and understandable structures and compositions.

With LP5, the search for the disconnection of human qualities in music came from the compositional side, marking a turning point on Autechre's musical journey, here densely packed, breakneck and complex rhythms are found, played by abstract and simplistic synthetic sounds, esoteric, manipulated and chopped samples with lush synthesizer backings, whom, while taking a step back in prominence, serve to provide a cold, and perhaps even melancholic atmosphere to the tracks. It's all very fast, yet minimal, to apply the machine analogy, it's in the style of modern factory equipment; a myriad of tightly packed, precise and minimal adjustments, instead of the industrial-esce sounds of their previous records.

Yet, unlike subsequent releases, LP5 maintains its human qualities by the limitations of the era, samples being very obviously recordings, having limited dynamic range and reverberation, the mastering present in the record, not yet having evolved into the clean-cut affairs of newer Autechre releases, it's a record which marks the transition of Autechre into its modern incarnation, of breakneck and inventive drum programming and sound design, which arguably remains unparalleled to this day.
